seed savers honoured
October 6, 2007 by hortstudent
I first heard about Percy Schmeiser’s long court battle with the agribusiness giant Monsanto, over canola seed patent violations, from watching the disturbing but motivating documentary film The Fight for True Farming, by Quebec director Eve Lamont. This week Saskatchewan farmers Percy and Louise Schmeiser were named winners of the 2007 Right Livelihood Award (unofficially considered the alternative Nobel Prize). The selection panel for the award recognized the Schmeisers “for their courage in defending biodiversity and farmers’ rights, and challenging the environmental and moral perversity of the current interpretations of patent laws”.
